Great day at NYCC. I can talk about how the layout is way better this year, as there is no construction. I can talk about the awesome people I met standing in line and chatting with people in line and at booths. I can talk about some of the cool purchases I made and how I am looking forward to tomorrow's panels.
But no. I need to talk about the horrible customer service experience I had. It just bothers me that much.
I am waiting in line to see Robert Kirkman, writer of, among other things, The Walking Dead. I stood where I was told to stand, which happened to be next to a dealer with longboxes of Silver Age Comics. What do I do when I find myself in front of longboxes? I browse. And what do I do when I browse? I spend money.
Yet, as I am asking the guys in line to hold my space and walking over to the boxes, the owner rudely tells me to move. I tell him I am going to look. He scoffs and says that I won't buy anything, that I am not interested in Silver Age comics because I am in line for Robert Kirkman.
Huh?
First of all, do NOT question my Silver Age nerd cred. I wanted Not Brand Echh and I wanted Shooter Legion comics, among other things. I would have spent money. Heck, it's my goal someday to own all 102 Lee/Kirby issues of FF. You are going to tell me that, just because I like a current title, I can't like Silver Age stuff?!
Second-- who cares what you think? When is it EVER okay for a merchant to insult a potential customer, or to discourage me to shop. I would have dropped at least $10, maybe $40 just then, and probably more later if the prices and selection were good. I needed something to do and something to read in line, and YOU were the one who convinced me to take my money elsewhere. Shame on you.
Sorry I had to start with a negative post. Fortunately, that was the only bad experience. Everyone else was fun and nice and awesome. I look forward to day two: Panels, autographs, shopping and FUN!
Excelsior!

Wow. That completely sucks! What a Doosh-monkey!
On the other hand, How was Kirkman? I've never read Walking Dead, but I love the show, and I'm a huge fan of Invincible.
He was hilarious! He got there late (car trouble) but promised to get to everyone in the line no matter how late he had to stay. I chatted with him for a few minutes, and he was gracious and funny!
